I recently got invited down to Brighton’s hottest new vegan fried chicken place, Really Happy Chicken. I was so excited about this kind of small business opening up in the heart of Brighton, just off western road and close to KFC.
The location is really cool and minimal and has facts about chickens on the wall which I really like. The owner is super friendly and we had a great chat about food and their future plans. Lots of exciting things to come!
I think they’re nailed the branding and the menu so well, they have all the kinds of stuff you could get on a kfc menu without the obvious cruelty and exploitation that us vegan try to avoid. Check out their full menu here.

Lots of pubs and small places do burgers and nuggets for vegans but Brighton was definitely missing a 100% vegan fried chicken place. The chicken is seitan based and is one of the best faux chicken products I’ve had. It can be really hard to get something authentic and not spongey in texture when you work with seitan.
I decided to get the classic Kentucky burger (fried chicken, lettuce, and mayo), fries, popcorn chicken, buffalo wings, kombucha, and an oreo shake with cream and marshmallows.

Really Kentucky Burger: Crispy chick’n seitan fillet, lettuce, our signature Really Happy mayo [Allergens: Gluten] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . £6.45
The crispy coating on the chicken was incredible, the colonel should hit them up for some tips because he is sorely lacking in that department when you compare them to Really Happy Chicken. Flavoursome, crispy, and tender in all the right ways.

Kentucky Popcorn: Crispy chick’n seitan pieces [Allergens: G] . . . . . . . £4.95
Fries: Crispy thin fries . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . £2.95
The seitan center was darker in colour than I expected and didn’t mimic chicken exactly but it’s great. They chose flavour over appearance and I am all for that. The crispy outside, flavour, and all the other glorious sauces and additions added make them a taste sensation for sure.

All the sauces are made by them too and are really delicious. the truffle mayo and buffalo sauce in particular are incredible. I totally recommend getting in on some dip action when you visit.
Buffalo Hot Wings: 4 crispy chick’n seitan wings dipped in house made buffalo sauce, green chilli, celery stalk, ranch [Allergens: G] . . . . . . . £6.95

The milkshake was the best oreo shake I’ve ever had, it was too good to take a photo of before slurping up the whole thing, amazing.
The presentation of the food was great, just everything overall from the location to the food was spot on. Will definitely be hitting these guys up for some great eats again soon.
