Pieminister has added another vegan pie to its selection to give us plant eaters more comfort food heaven. The newest addition ‘Chooks Away’ will join the Kevin which has won numerous awards (no doubt Chooks Away will too).
The guys at Pieminister really know what they’re doing and have created a British classic without the cruelty. Keeping meat off your plate doesn’t have to cost the earth (RRP £2.80) or endanger any cute animals. The new flavour ‘Chooks Away’ made with tofu and seitan instead of chicken doesn’t compromise on flavour or taste.
Both are registered with The Vegan Society and are available online, in Pieminister restaurants or retail outlets like Waitrose.
If Pieminister is totally new to you then allow me to introduce you to the best pies you will ever have.
The Kevin: A mushroom, tomato & red wine pie with baby onions and thyme.
A great alternative to beef that makes me think of Beef Bourguignon, without the cow. If you’re partial to a steak kind of pie then you’ll love this. I’ve always been more of a chicken and mushroom girl myself so the new pie is definitely my favourite.
Chooks Away: A creamy chicken pie with celeriac, smoked garlic and sherry.
The fillings are tasty morsels of goodness with no soggy bottoms. The pastry perfectly encapsulates the filling inside which is packed full of flavour and home comfort. Eaten with some mash or roasties with veg and gravy is a a winning combo and is sure to go down a treat.
If you fancied something a bit more special the Pieminister restaurants have 2 mains and unbelievable desserts now available.
The vegan Mother Earth will have the most committed carnivores begging for a slice of vegan action.
Mother Earth: A vegan pie on a bed of champ mash with garden peas, finished with a parsnip and kale fritter.
100% plant-based, 100% delicious, it’s a great meal for under £10.
Feelin’ Gravy: the poutine-style loaded fries with caramelized onions, vegan cheese, and rich gravy.
Other temptations on the vegan menu include spicy fried cauliflower with curry sauce and Puglian olives (both included in the 3 small plates for £9.95 deal) plus a wide range of sides to go with your pies (salt and pepper onion rings and smoky baked beans)
And for pudding, try the vegan ice cream sundaes. Choose between ‘Pecan Pie sundae’ and the show-stopping ‘Gold Digger’ (pictured above), made with vegan salted caramel ice cream and vegan chocolate shortbread, all a-shimmer with gold dust.
If you don’t live near one of the restaurants, don’t fret, you can still enjoy some plant-based pie-fection in 2019. Kevin and Chooks Away are both available in the smaller cafes, to enjoy on their own or as part of a vegan Mothership (that’s a pie, mash, minty mushy peas, vegan cheese and crispy shallots).
Both pies are also available through retail outlets nationwide (270g, RRP £2.80). Just contact Pieminister on 0117 950 4567 to find your nearest stockist or you can order then on Pieminister’s online shop and have them delivered direct to your door.
