New Year, Best You!

New Year, Best You!

It’s January 3rd and the internet is full of quotes and people saying New Year, New You! I hate that saying! Mainly because it’s surrounded by connotations about weight loss and how people overindulged over christmas.

Being healthy is great and I’m all for that but the new year is usually the start of fad diets and unhealthy body image posts. We should all be trying to be the best version of ourselves, not a newer “shinier” version that’s lost weight.

This shouldn’t be about what’s on the outside but about self development, being happy and creating a better world/life for ourselves. Creating goals, doing things you’ve always wanted to do, giving back and not just thinking of ourselves, staying humble.

There is no guidebook and that’s not what I’m writing here. There is no set way to be the best you that you can be, that is for you to discover. Don’t get bogged down in the idea that this year you must lose weight to be of value.

We can all improve so again not speaking about what is on the outside but by bettering ourselves. Everyone can always learn more, do more, be more.

Why don’t you try Veganuary this year? take some risks, make that pitch you were too scared to make last year. Whatever it might be that you want to do, DO IT! Because this is your year, this is your time.

2019 should be a journey of self-discovery, improving yourself, your life and kicking ass! So make shit happen! I know I’ll be thinking hard about what I want to achieve this year and setting goals because I want to be better. Be proactive, don’t wait for opportunities to come to you or to be ready (no one is ever ready) so go do it!

I hope you enjoyed this post and that you check them out.

Great post! I definitely agree about the saying, I quite dislike it as well. Indeed what matters is on the inside, and actually making useful changes! There no need to shame ourselves for potentially eating more during the holidays, it’s normal!
I was so surprised to see how many people are doing Veganuary this year, it’s wonderful!

Thank you! Everyone seems to love the post which makes me so happy. It’s fantastic isn’t it. Love seeing the number grow each year.

Replacing the ‘New You’ part of the slogan with ‘Best You’ was I think a subtle and important edit. It’s so easy to try too hard and thereby set ourselves up to feel even worse, and not sustain much progress. Finding resilient, inspiring language to describe our opportunities for change is so helpful. Thanks & Happy New Year!

Thank you!! I’m so glad people agree. I couldn’t agree more. There’s nothing worse than setting the bar incredibly high and also trying fad diets etc and getting unhealthy or what people would consider failing at these goals that are so important. My pleasure. Your comment has made my day. Thank you! 💖S xo

SO well said Siobhan! I hate the pressure too of the new year new me. We are all beautiful and wonderful at this current moment. Working on self development is my most important goal too!

Thank you! I was hoping people would get it and wouldn’t think I was hating on people wanting to lose weight if that’s what they want to do. Absolutely! We can all work on ourselves and be better.

This year I’m focussing on mental health, which definitely needs to involve exercise and if weight loss comes with that then great. Always focussing on the weight is awful for myself though so that needs to change!

Same here!! Not criticising weight loss as I need to get my bmi in healthy range.. it’s just all people focus on. They go on these really unhealthy diets and obsess, it’s not good.
