Lots of people are getting ill at the moment or are worried about becoming ill. Well, there’s actually a lot you can do naturally to support your immune system to help you stay you healthy.
Pick a wide variety of colourful fruits and vegetables to get all your nutrients.
Foods that help your immune system and you stay healthy:
Garlic – It helps you ward off illness and recover quicker with it’s natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Raw garlic is best and can actually increase the number of t-cells in your blood, which fight viruses.
Turmeric – It has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal herb. Curcumin is the main ingredient in turmeric. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory and strong antioxidant. It’s a very versatile spice and one of my favourites. Works better when taken with black pepper and eaten with fattier meals (it’s fat soluble).
Cinnamon – can reduce bacteria’s ability to multiply, and helps clear up colds quicker.
Ginger – Ginger has a long history of use in alternative medicine. It has been used to help aid digestion, reduce nausea and fight flu and colds, to name a few. *Gingerol is the main compound, responsible for its medicinal properties.
Chillies – fresh red and green chillies are sworn by health boosters. They contain lots of vitamin C, vitamin A and capsaicin (to help clear congestion and phlegm).
Citrus fruits – are full of vitamin C, to help fight off infections. Try oranges, lemons and limes.
Watermelon – these contain citrulline (keeps your heart healthy), lycopene (keeps your immune system balanced.) & vitamins A, C and B6 (to help fight off infections).
Mushrooms – Plant source of vitamin D, which supports your immune system.
Broccoli – Full of nutrients like vitamins A, C and E and choline (good for your gut). Similar superfoods you should try are sprouts, kale and cauliflower.
Peppers – these contain lots of vitamin A, which can help repair your body’s mucosal barriers.
Yoghurt – Choose one that contains live cultures as these help your immune system fight against bad bacteria in your gut. They can also encourage your body to produce more white blood cells.
General tips for supporting your immunity:
- Eat a healthy diet with lots of fruit, vegetables and whole foods.
