Thinking about going vegan but don’t know where to start? Why not make a few simple swaps to get you started? That’s how change starts usually, slowly. If you’re doing veganuary this year you might be feeling a bit overwhelmed, well I’m here to help.
Everyone approaches veganism differently, I jumped in feet first and stumbled a bit initially. We all need help and can have slip ups, it’s just important to start and to be patient with yourself. And it helps to arm yourself with some tips and tricks.
In no particular order here are the easiest swaps you can make in the kitchen for a better and more conscious you:
1. Plant Milk > Cows Milk
It’s super easy to switch up your morning coffee, lots of brands even have barista milks which froth up for coffee.
Oat, almond, hazelnut, cashew, hemp, soy, coconut, pea, tigernut… There are so many brands now like alpro, oatly, silk, so delicious, califia farms and more. They’re widely available in supermarkets.
2. Vegan Butters/Spreads > Butter
Coconut oil, avocado, flora, vitalite, naturli, pure, earth balance, miyokos kitchen, nutiva, koko dairy free, biona, country crock… there are so many now and they’re widely available in supermarkets.
These spreads and butters work just as well in your cakes and on your toast but contain no dairy.
3. Vegan Yoghurt > Yoghurt
Coconut, vanilla, strawberry, blueberry, cherry, plain, we have all the flavours and they taste the same as the dairy versions. There are so many brands now like alpro, nush, coyo, silk, so delicious, follow your heart, califia farms and they’re widely available in supermarkets.
They taste the same as dairy yoghurts but are much lower in fat, are dairy free and totally delicious.
4. Maple Syrup Or Agave > Honey
Your life can still be sweet, its easy to ditch honey for these alternatives.
Vegan honey products are still available by brands like plant based artisan but can be expensive. I would opt for maple syrup (which is widely available) or agave to sweeten.
5. Vegan Mayonnaise > Mayonnaise
I was never a huge mayo fan if Im honest and much prefer the vegan versions. They are very similar in texture and appearance but I think vegan ones just taste better.
These days giants like hellman’s, Nandos and marks and spencers have made vegan mayo and it can be found easily in most supermarkets. You can also make your own or use avocado. Also check out mayo from sacla, follow your heart, hunter and gather, granovita, dr wills, leon, earth balance, trader joe’s and more.
6. Dairy Free Icecream > Icecream
These days giants like Ben & Jerrys have made vegan icecream and it can be found easily in most supermarkets. You can also make your own or check out booja booja, halo top, swedish glace, northern block, judes, alpro, breyers, haagen daaz, so delicious and more.
They taste the same but are much lower in fat, are dairy free and totally delicious.
7. Vegan Pizza > Pizza
You can still pick up a pizza at the supermarket just vegan ones. Lookout for the brands below.
These days giants like Goodfellas & Chicago town have made vegan pizza and it can be found easily in most supermarkets. You can also make your own or check out one planet pizza, white rabbit, pizza express, Amy’s Kitchen, Daiya and more.
8. Meat Alternatives > Meat
If you’re really into meat like me you’ll really enjoy trying what’s out there. And if you’re not into processed meat subs then try tofu, tempeh, mushrooms or lentils.
These days giants like Tesco, Quorn and Linda McCartney have made vegan meat substitutes and they can be found easily in most supermarkets. You can also make your own or check out meatless farm, this, gardein, tofurky, heck, vivera, oumph, beyond meat and more.
9. Vegan Cheese > Cheese
Everyone always says they can’t give up cheese, I love cheese and I did. It just depends on your priorities. Plus you can still have cheese. your tastebuds change and you get used to the difference.
There are so many brands now like nush, so delicious, follow your heart, violife, tofutti, miyokos, applewood and they’re widely available in supermarkets.
10. Vegan Chocolate > Chocolate
You won’t miss out on chocolate because loads of people do it. You can even get a vegan galaxy bar here in the UK now.
*Most dark chocolate is vegan friendly but do check for butter in them.
These days giants like galaxy and cadbury have made vegan chocolate and they can be found easily in most supermarkets. You can also check out enjoy, tonys chocolonely, nomo, raw halo, moo free, plamil, vego, purdys, divine, green & blacks, whole foods, chocolove and more.
I’m kind of over dark chocolate, it can be boring and bitter but there’s tons of nice milky vegan chocolate out there. So whatever colour or flavour you like there’s a bar for you!
All of these products are great substitutes that are easy to swap out. Most even taste the same as the dairy versions. So why not try out a few of these and see how easy it is to be vegan.
